Today marks the second time I saw an owl...in the day time! He flew right in front of me and landed in a tree on the other side of the trail where he proceeded to pounce on breakfast. What a sight...what a wing span! I'm going to try to get the video on my Youtube channel.
The wildlife along the trail is entertaining. From the black squirrels with their sleek coats who always seem to be at play, to the various snakes that venture out to sun themselves. Usually I see a black snake or garter snake, but it was a copperhead that was stretched across my path. I don't mind snakes, but copperheads do make me cringe.
There are deer, ducks, geese, birds of all kinds, the occasional otter or beaver, and loads of chipmunks that dart across the path as if playing chicken. Grey squirrels, bunnies, turkeys, various bugs, moths, turtles, frogs, salamanders, and more, this trail has it all! And the greenery! Fabulous!
For those who come here to 'race the clock', you are missing out on the spectacular show that Mother Nature has placed before you. Slow down, rubber-neck, and enjoy. Whether walking, jogging, rollerblading, or biking, you are in for a relaxing and enjoyable day. Stop and listen to the birdsong.
There are public restrooms at the trail head with concessions. And the dreaded porta-potties at various stops along the way. I know...gag! But when you gotta go; you gotta go. My experience has been that they aren't that bad. The trail is very well maintained with many benches and picnic tables for taking breaks. There is a gazebo at the 10 mile mark where I sat in the shade enjoying my apple and deer jerky.
It's 10 miles out and 10 miles back, but it is a relatively gentle ride. When I'm at home thinking I'd like to go for a bike ride, my only whine is that it is a 40 minute drive to get there. However, once I'm there, I am reminded just how much I love this bike trail. Yeah, okay, there is the DQ I stop at on the way home for additional incentive. But I only get a small vanilla cone so that's not too bad, right?
If you've biked The Greenway Trail, feel free to share your experiences in the Comments section. If you haven't and ever come this way...check it out. You won't be disappointed. It's even more beautiful in the Autumn.
